Reverse osmosis

Under-sink reverse osmosis, installed from $829

Drinking and cooking water at one tap, without the scale problem a whole-house system is meant to solve. Flat rate, faucet hole drilling included, no trip fee in Yavapai County.

What it costs

4-stage system

Sediment pre-filter, two carbon stages and the RO membrane. The standard build, and the right one for most homes.

$829Installed, flat rate

5-stage with remineralization

Adds an alkaline remineralizing stage after the membrane, which puts back calcium and magnesium and raises pH. If you find RO water tastes flat, this is the fix.

$999Installed, flat rate

Both include the system, the install, the dedicated faucet and drilling the counter if there is no spare hole. Under $1,000 by design — see the licensing note.

How it works

What reverse osmosis actually removes

Water is pushed under household pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. Dissolved contaminants are too large to pass and go down the drain; the water that gets through is stored in a small tank under the sink.

It handles the great majority of dissolved solids — arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, sodium, lead, and the dissolved minerals behind a flat or metallic taste. On a Yavapai County well with arsenic near or over the EPA limit of 10 µg/L, a point-of-use RO system is the standard, affordable answer for the water you actually drink.

What it does not do is fix scale. The rest of the house still gets untreated water, so the water heater, the shower glass and the dishwasher see the same hardness they saw before. That is a different problem with a different fix.

Maintenance

Living with one

  • Filters once a year. Sediment and carbon stages. Ten minutes and inexpensive.
  • Membrane every three to five years. Longer on soft water, shorter on hard.
  • Slower than the main tap. The tank refills over a few hours; you notice only if you fill a stockpot twice in a row.
  • It uses some water. Rejected water goes to the drain. Worth knowing on a well with a weak recovery rate.
  • Check the TDS yearly. A rising reading at the RO tap is how you know the membrane is finishing.

Questions we get asked

Can you come out right now?

Not for new work. We are rebranding and adding Arizona contractor licenses, and we are not booking new jobs for a few weeks. Jobs already on the schedule are not affected.

What does an under-sink reverse osmosis system cost installed?

$829 for a 4-stage system and $999 for a 5-stage system with alkaline remineralization.

Flat rate, including the system, the installation and drilling the faucet hole if your counter needs one. No trip fee anywhere in Yavapai County.

Does reverse osmosis remove arsenic?

Yes — it is one of the most effective point-of-use methods for arsenic.

Removal is better for arsenic V than arsenic III, which is why the lab panel matters: it tells us which form you have and whether pre-oxidation is needed. For a well over the 10 µg/L EPA limit, RO at the drinking tap is the standard affordable answer.

Will RO water taste flat?

Some people find it does, because the dissolved minerals that carry flavor are gone.

That is what the 5-stage remineralizing build is for — it adds calcium and magnesium back after the membrane and raises the pH. If you like the taste of bottled mineral water, spend the extra $170.

Does it need its own faucet?

Yes, a small dedicated faucet at the sink, and drilling the hole is included in the price.

If your sink or counter already has a spare hole — a soap dispenser or an unused sprayer — we use that. Granite and quartz are no problem.

Not a licensed contractor

Work is performed under the Arizona handyman exemption, A.R.S. § 32-1121(A)(14): any single project is limited to less than $1,000 including labor and materials, and excludes work requiring a building permit and all natural gas and propane work. Neil Staiger has 32 years of Arizona plumbing experience and holds current manufacturer certifications from Moen, Kohler, Navien, Rinnai and Charger Water Treatment Products. More about that. Additional Arizona contractor licenses are in progress.
